The Northern Territory: Australia's Digital Silicon Valley
In the mid-1990s, the Northern Territory Racing Commission pioneered corporate digital gambling by granting bookmaking licenses to visionary sports betting firms, most notably Terry Peabody’s Centrebet in Alice Springs. The Moral Moral Panic and the 2000 Moratorium

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001: The Regulatory Compromise
In July 2001, Federal Parliament passed the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (IGA). The IGA established a definitive legal compromise: it strictly banned the provision of interactive casino games (slots, blackjack, roulette, poker) to people residing in Australia, while deliberately preserving legal online sports betting, racing wagering, and lotteries provided bets were placed before event commencement. This legislative framework positioned Australia as a massive legal digital sports betting market while driving real-money online casinos into offshore jurisdictions.
